Dance to Get Fit!

Arizona couple Country dancingDid you know that social ballroom dances like the Country Two Step, Swing or Salsa, can actually improve your athleticism? That’s right! As fun and exciting learning to dance is, it is equally as beneficial. Regular dance lessons will improve your balance, flexibility, and endurance, all of which are important components of sports fitness. What you learn in those dance lessons can apply to your sports activities – score!

Cardiovascular fitness is crucial to every fitness activity, from track and field to soccer to baseball! Dancing improves your body’s ability to deliver oxygen to your muscles and tissues, which is key to staying healthy and trim. Stamina is also an essential aspect of being successful in sports, and if this is an area in need of improvement for you, it will show. If you build endurance with dance lessons and practice, you can condition your cardiovascular system while being active on your feet for hours at a time!

One perk of conditioning that athletes focus on is avoiding injury. When you get injured, you put a halt to more conditioning and playing. If you keep your muscles in shape in a low-impact, all-inclusive way, you could be less susceptible to injury. Dance lessons and regular stretching will help you with flexibility, a vital instrument for avoiding injury. Though you may not realize it, ballroom dance is actually fairly demanding! You have to maintain your balance and endurance while staying flexible and agile for hours at a time. Consistency is key here and regular dancing will be the most beneficial for the best results. Our maple sprung floors here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, AZ are great for those with bad knees or joint problems. (There are thousands of tiny rubber balls under the wood, creating a low-impact, safer dance floor for you to enjoy!)

Did you know that Ballroom dancing can burn a good amount of calories? Salsa dancing, for example, can burn up to 480 calories per hour! Between 290 and 420 calories can go with Country Western styles like Country Swing and Country Two Step. With each hour dancing the Cha Cha, you can burn anywhere from 260 to 530 calories! With dancing, you have to support your own body weight, which can help improve bone density and muscular strength. Students of ours have reported feeling more energetic with more pep in their step from taking regular lessons, enjoying the self-expression and stress relief that dancing can also provide. A better mood and higher self-esteem are also great benefits which can manifest in your sports activities as well. With more energy, higher confidence, and a better mood, you can accomplish a lot!

Crosstraining is one of the best ways to reap maximum benefits from your fitness regimen. Prevent boredom and take a different approach to improving your endurance, flexibility, strength, mood, confidence, and more with social dance lessons! Dance FX Studios will take into account your goals and needs for taking lessons and create a lesson plan just for you. Schedule your introductory lesson today and start experiencing the benefits of dance! What are you waiting for?

Make Your Wedding Day Investments Last!

couple two step dancing in Mesa, AZLet’s be honest – Weddings can be expensive. The worst part is that, at the end of the day, the majority of your wedding supplies end up in the trash! Make your wedding work for you with these helpful ideas:

1. Pick out shoes that you’ll want to wear again

How often do you see yourself wearing white satin pumps or crystal encrusted stilettos after walking down the aisle in them? Probably not that often. Instead, why not opt for a more versatile shoe choice? Lots of brides are going the more casual direction with Vans, Toms, Converse, and the like. Not only does it bring a bit of individuality into their outfit, but you know you’ll wear those shoes again. If you want to keep it classy, you can still do that with a pretty pair of ballet flats or a fun blue heel! Just keep true to your own style and don’t let those shoes go to waste!

2. Pick the color – not the dress

When choosing bridesmaids dresses, try going with a color scheme instead of a specific dress. Not every body type will look great in the same style, so give them a color and let your ladies go wild! They can each choose a flattering dress that they’d love to wear out on the town – not purchase a dress that is going to sit in the back of their closet for the next 7 years. Bridesmaids dresses don’t have to scream “BRIDESMAID DRESS!” if you don’t want them to.

3. Hem your wedding dress
If you decide to go with a simpler, flowy dress, consider hemming it after your big day. Some wedding dresses these days make beautiful day dresses without the train. Instead of putting it in storage, hem your dress just above the knee for a flirty transformation!
4. Throw birdseed instead of rice
You won’t necessarily get money back for this switch, but the birds will thank you. Plus, no one has to worry about cleanup – the birds have it taken care of.
5. Give out useful favors
As much as you want to give out mini frames or coasters with your names on them, 90% of them will end up in the trash. Try giving out favors that your guests will use! Think along the lines of candles, edibles, water bottles, etc. What would you want to receive at your friends wedding? A single coaster with their faces on it or a bag full of cookies and candy? I know which one I’d pick.
6. Learn to dance – for real
Everyone wants their first dance to be special, so make it work for you! Instead of settling for the 8th-grade sway, get help from a professional. This is the perfect opportunity for you and your loved one to learn how to actually dance with each other – which you can do for the rest of your lives. Not many things from your wedding day, aside from your rings and your marriage, will actually last that long! Now, this doesn’t mean go pay someone to give you choreography so you can do one dance to one song forever and ever. This means find a studio that teaches actual lead and follow so you can dance to ANY song forever and ever. If you want to have them put a dance together for you as well, by all means, go for it. But make sure you’re learning real technique or it’s a waste of your time.
If you happen to live in Phoenix, Arizona, we can help you with our final suggestion by teaching you and your sweetie how to dance! Learning fun and cool dances from the Salsa to Swing dancing to the Country Two Step makes for great date nights post-marriage to keep the flame ignited, in addition to an exciting and unexpected wedding dance! You will have a hobby as a couple that you can take anywhere, from your honeymoon to your living room. Check us out at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona for social dance lessons and wedding dance lessons. Invest in a skill that will keep you holding each other tight for years to come!

Ballroom Dancing Techniques Help You To Dance With Confidence!

couple country dancing in AZ

As you may know from reading our previous blogs, the key to comfortable, fun, and confident social dancing, from Country dancing to Latin dances like Salsa and Bachata, is strong leading and following skills. Looking great on the dance floor, before learning all of the trendy spins and dips, means establishing confidence as a leader or follower. There are many aspects to this, but one important concept of social ballroom dancing is the “foot follows the frame” rule.

When first learning, beginner social ballroom dancers tend to focus on the steps more than they need to. With so much focus on the feet, steps can be exaggerated and emphasis on what really matters, the connection between two within the dance frame, is lost. With an unsure top half, dancers can look a little awkward or get frustrated because their dancing suddenly feels clumsy or awkward. The key, though, is to think not of the footwork, but rather of the frame! If you move your frame with purpose and surety, your feet will follow suit. Keeping your feet under your frame and maintaining your center of balance is important to looking cool, calm, and collected on the dance floor. If your feet and frame are out of synch and your feet leap out in front of you, your movements will look jerky, on the other hand. If your body’s core is centered over your feet, the support system, your movements will look more flowing and continuous. This will lead to a more relaxed, natural look in your movements and poise.

As a leader in your Country, Latin, Swing or Ballroom dance lessons, perhaps you have heard from your instructor that you need to direct your partner with your upper body and “guide” her with your frame.  The frame should be the one doing the driving, turning, and spinning, not the feet. Your partner has no contact with your feet, so a  connection cannot be made and communication is therefore lost if you use your lower half. With the upper half, however, your partner can feel your intentions and true leading and following in ballroom dancing, and partner dancing in general, can be achieved.  As a follower, you know that you can better understand your partner and feel where they are leading you when the connection and communication are strong through the frame. In the same light, you should let your frame listen to your leader, with your feet following and staying beneath your weight.

It’s definitely not to say that you should only move your upper body and that your feet will magically follow, but rather that you should put the focus on your frame and keep in mind that your feet should follow your frame through all movements. This will help in always maintaining your center of balance.

If you are thinking that the strength of your frame and the synchronicity of your feet and frame could use a little help, ask your dance instructor for assistance in that area in your next dance lesson. Not taking lessons yet? Join Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona for the best social dancing lessons in the Valley! Swing dancing at Dance

Become a Great Social Dancer With Tips From Us!

Swing dancing at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, AZLearning to dance starts with finding the studio that is the right fit for you. There are plenty of dance studios in the PhoenixValley, but how do you pick one? There’s a lot of research to be done and comparisons to be made. Maybe you have been to a ballroom dance studio and had a lesson or two, but discovered that typical ballroom lessons aren’t the right fit for you because the competition style of lessons is not practical. You want to go out Country dancing at bars with your friends or meet new people at Salsa clubs looking calm and cool, not go to competitions and have a stiff, showy frame. If you want to win trophies, then those studios might be perfect for you. But if you are looking for real dancing for real people, Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona can help!

Dance FX Studios focuses on social ballroom dancing as opposed to competitive ballroom dancing. You will learn dances that are applicable to the places you want to dance, not outdated ones that you won’t see out socially. We have a unique syllabus that we personalize to each student to ensure that they become a capable social dancer in a way that’s right for them. This means that you will learn the tips and tools you need to have fun and look GREAT in the social dancing world, not at a competition. What kinds of tips and tools? Here’s a glimpse into of what our instructors incorporate in social dance lessons here at Dance FX Studios:

1)      Strong leading and following – The foundation of partner dancing is the connection and communication between dance partners. We teach every man to be a strong leader and every woman to be a great follower. Guys, you are in charge on the dance floor! You are the brains of the operation, deciding where to lead and what steps to take. Ladies, you are the heart that feels your leader’s intentions. Put the two together, and you have a great partnership that can lead to fun all night long, wherever you are!

2)      Dance floor navigation – Sometimes dance floors get crowded and it can be difficult to maneuver around other couples. This can lead to awkward elbow and shoulder bumps or potentially dangerous falls. Part of being a great leader is making sure you keep your partner safe and happy, so we incorporate navigation skills for busy dance floors into your lessons.

3)      Musicality and interpretation – One of the most exciting things about dancing is feeling the music and expressing yourself. When you get to the point of knowing which dances to do to certain songs and where to add in fun moves like turns and spins, it is such a rush! Some people have a more difficult time feeling rhythm and connecting with a song. That’s where musicality comes in! You will get practice in deciding which dances are applicable to which situations and how to look like a natural every time you step on the dance floor.

To take a spin on the Dance FX Studios’ dance floor and see if we are the right studio for you, try our Introductory Dance Lesson Offer. You can discover what dance can do for you and you will begin learning how to be a great social dancer! This first lesson is a full hour of dancing and exploring new skillls with your instructor, for just $40. Be Comfortable on the Dance Floor in Your Wedding Gown

Arizona bride and groom dancingLast week, we discussed how important it is to be comfortable and confident on your big day, and the role that footwear can play in how you feel. It can affect your comfort level and be a factor in how much you dance and move around during the reception. You should feel free to wear what you are comfortable and confident in not only when it comes to your shoes, but also your dress-especially in preparation for your wedding dance!

The perfect wedding gown is at the top of the list for most brides. As a bride, you have probably looked at countless options on the internet and maybe you have even gone in to shops to pick “The One”! There is such a wide variety in wedding gown silhouettes, necklines, and fabric types that it can be hard to decide what’s right for you. You probably have the styles you prefer in mind, but have you considered the impact your choice can have on your confidence and comfort level for the rest of the night? Let’s discuss a few options regarding silhouette.

Mermaid – This shape is defined by a slim, tapered, curve-hugging skirt that follows the line of the hips and thighs and flares out below the knee. While this style is trendy and uniquely flattering, the cut is rather constricting. It looks best on tall women, curvy women, and petite figures who want to accentuate their curves.

A Line – This is a classic shape that looks great on almost anyone! It is distinguished by its subtle flare out from the hips, at shoulder-width, creating an A shaped silhouette. This dress will allow you to be more mobile and dance all night during your reception!

Ball Gown – The ball gown style is reserved for more formal ceremonies. Characterized by a fitted bodice with a full, bell-shaped, floor-length skirt, this dress is better for tall and/or pear shaped brides. This gown does allow for more movement than more constricting styles, but if the skirt is rather full, it can get in the way of dancing or socializing.

Ballerina – Ballerina ball gowns are especially romantic and feminine. They have the tulle ball gown skirts like the classic ball gown, but on a smaller, more manageable scale that typically hits about mid-calf. Above the skirt, this gown typically has a delicate top with a variety of strap and sash options. This style looks great on shorter women with stellar calves and women with broad shoulders.

Empire – This dress is great for comfort and confidence! The empire waistline starts just below the bust and the rest of the dress drops straight down, creating a gown that is not overly full but provides coverage. This is the perfect dress for women with short torsos, tall, thin women, and heavy set women with apple shapes, as it creates a slimming affect.

SlipA slip dress would take up less space around you, but can be quite revealing, which make some women uncomfortable. If you have a thin frame you want to show off, this dress could be right for you! It is an elegant style that is typically made of satin and clings to your body.

With so many options of wedding gowns to choose from, it is important to weigh the pros and cons of each style of dress out there. While one dress may be absolutely gorgeous, you may not feel comfortable all night; whereas another dress might be comfortable, but doesn’t give you that wow factor you are looking for. It is very important for brides to pick a dress that they will shine in and be able to enjoy themselves in. Confidence and comfort are key!

Besides just your gown, a special first dance personalized just for you and solid dance skills will also make you comfortable on your big day. All eyes will be on you and your new spouse while you share a dance choreographed and tailored to your needs and wants with your guests. No matter your style or vision, Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona can help you shine in your beautiful gown on the dance floor! You deserve nothing but the best for your big day, so visit us or call to schedule your consultation today at 480.968.6177.

country dance lessons in ArizonaWe all know that Arizona summers are hot and long. The rising temperatures can sometimes throw a wrench in our routines, keeping us from our regular outdoor activities and social events. We have great hiking trails and biking routes in our area, but the heat this time of year prevents us from enjoying them. Maybe this is the time of year that you go out more, but you are getting bored with the usual Happy Hour with the same people. All those cocktails and appetizers combined with less activity can lead to you feeling sluggish or noticing extra weight in areas you would rather not have.

Looking for a way to meet new friends, stay fit and trim, and have some FUN in the desert sun?  Dance FX Studios has been teaching social dance lessons to singles from all over the Phoenix Valley for 13 years. We have had adult students of all ages and interests who come to us to build confidence, to challenge themselves, to get fit, to relieve stress, to have a place to express themselves, and so much more.

Dancing has been proven time and again to be a great addition to anyone’s fitness regime and to exercise muscles in every area of the body. It is great for toning up arms, legs, and core muscles and can also be a great stress reliever. Even better, our studio is air conditioned and we even have a sprung maple floor that is low impact on knees and other joints!

Dance FX Studios is located in Mesa on the southeast corner of Dobson and Guadalupe, just off the 101 freeway. Not a far drive from campus at all! One of our great options this Summer, especially for college students, is our couples’ group classes. Each class takes place one night a week for 4 weeks. The course is progressive, which means that you will build on what you’ve learned in past weeks and incorporate new moves and combinations every class. We use popular Country songs from our continuously updated Spotify playlists that are bound to be played at the bars, so you will be able to dance to music you are probably familiar with. What makes our studio special is that we offer social dancing lessons, as opposed to competition dancing lessons. Not only will you learn moves, combos, and frame, you will also learn skills that are applicable to dancing in the real world, aka Mill! Things like navigating a busy dance floor, dance etiquette, how to make a connection with any partner and so much more are what you will get right here at Dance FX Studios!

We have group dance classes every weekday; Country Two Step on Mondays, Salsa on Tuesdays, Country Swing on Wednesdays, and Jitterbug Swing on Thursdays, all at 7 pm starting July 7th, 2014. The classes are only $75 for a 4 week course, per couple. We also have Line dancing classes on Friday nights at 6 pm, through July 11th, which are just $7 per person. You can bring a friend, your boyfriend or girlfriend, or someone you have been eyeballing at parties lately. Then, you can take what you learn out on the town! If you take the time now, you will have the skills and moves you learn this summer for the rest of your life! That equates to a lot of nights having fun, dancing, and meeting new people, and fewer nights spent on the sidelines or at home with Netflix. How great would that be?

Moms, Make Time for You With Dance Lessons!

happy couple ballroom dancing in ArizonaValley moms – are you feeling burnt out? Being a mom is a big job. It isn’t just multitasking, it is megatasking – you play the role of chauffeur, nurse, teacher, manager, chef, housekeeper… the list goes on! It is very easy to put the needs and wants of your family before your own, but this can lead to “mommy burnout”. Some things that burnt out moms can feel are physical and/or emotional exhaustion or illness, cynicism about their situation, a sense of powerlessness and hopelessness, a lack of meaning or personal accomplishment in their work, and a general feeling of being disengaged and uninterested in life. While your situation can make you feel like there is no end in sight, there IS a light at the end of the tunnel! You can take action and feel better with these 5 simple tasks:

1. Make a list of everything you accomplished in a 48 hour period. Include everything you have done for your family, yourself, or your home and you might be surprised at just how much you get done! Moms can sometimes be unrealistic in their expectations of themselves, which can lead to doing too much and spreading themselves thin. If you think about how much you can actually accomplish in 48 hours, the results might surprise you!

2. Get treatment for depression. Depression can be a primary culprit for “mommy burnout”, and it is totally okay to acknowledge that fact. If you think depression may be affecting you and our family, look into treatment options and see what you can do for yourself!

3. Take care of your body and soul. It is crucial that you take time to take care of yourself, especially as busy as you are! Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eat well, exercise, and drink plenty of water. You have probably heard these suggestions time and again, but they truly make a big difference in how you feel!

Another great solution is finding a fulfilling hobby just for you, or even just for you and your spouse.  Learning something new like playing an instrument is fun, but have you considered social ballroom dancing? Dancing can provide respite for your mind and soul and distract you from the daily grind, if only for an hour. Social dance lessons in Country Two Step, Salsa or Swing can help you to forget about your daily to-do’s and remind yourself of how important it is to give back to you. Connecting with others, getting fit and finding a positive outlet for yourself are just a few of the many benefits that social ballroom dancing has to offer.

If you are a mom that lives in Arizona and would like to start filling up your spirit with something healthy, exciting and new, contact us at Dance FX Studios! We can help you to remember that taking care of yourself must be your number one priority. Reconnect with your spouse or come solo for dance lessons that will having you rejuvenated and ready to be the best mom possible.  At Dance FX Studios in Mesa, AZ, we personalize each and every dance lesson, taking your goals and needs into account to ensure that you are happy and active.
