A Step-by-Step Guide to Dancing With Someone New

private dance lessons for couples near youGoing out social dancing at your local Country bar or Latin club can be quite intimidating. Never mind the amazing dancers having a blast out on the floor, looking like they’ve been dancing all their lives. You also get to contend with loud music, tons of people in a small, crowded space, dims lights and flowing alcohol. It’s easy to become overwhelmed very quickly, so let me help you ease your fears when it comes to choosing a dance partner with a step-by-step guide to dancing with someone new.

How many times have you joined friends out at a Country bar, a wedding, or a Latin dance club only to spend the entire night babysitting the purses at the table while your buddies are out Two Stepping or Salsa dancing? You want to join in the fun, but it’s scary out there and you don’t have a partner.  If you’ve felt this way before, it sucks! Let’s change things so your nights out can be filled with excitement, meeting new people and fun. Sound good? Great! Let’s start with Step 1….

1. Be prepared.

The best way to get ready to dance with someone new is to become a good dancer yourself. Who doesn’t want to dance with someone who can lead, or who follows like a dream? Most people gravitate towards the better dancers, subconsciously or not, so if you can become one of those people yourself, you’ll be ahead of the game.

“Learn to dance” sounds like a “Duh!” piece of advice, but what most people don’t discover until after they’ve gone out dancing without success over and over, is that it actually takes time to learn to dance well. Those couples who look awesome on the dance floor have put in hours and hours mastering their skill, believe me.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, know that no one is born knowing how to dance. There’s also not a pill (yet) that you can take to learn to dance overnight. In other words, there are no shortcuts. But, like most really cool things out there that you can discover, your time and financial investment towards learning to dance will be so worth it. Before you know it, you will be walking taller, feeling slimmer, and moving through life with more confidence than ever before.

So to get the ball rolling, sign yourself up for a beginner’s dance lesson to take your first step (pun intended) towards being a great Country, Latin or Swing dancer. And let’s not leave out the ever-so-sexy Argentine Tango! If you’re looking to explore an intimate and passionate dance with someone new, give the authentic Tango a try. you won’t regret it!

Regardless of the ballroom dance style you choose, the absolute fastest way to become a self-assured social dancer is through Private Dance Instruction. Working one-on-one with a professional will expedite your training time, ultimately saving you both time and money. Plus, you’ll be on that dance floor sooner rather than later because you have received details, tips on how to lead or follow, and proper technique that you can only get through Private Dance Lessons. Then, like a magnet, you’ll draw in the better dancers without even thinking about it.

2. Find the right place to dance.

What kind of music do you enjoy? What’s your “scene” when it comes to going out with friends? Do you like the club vibe, a Country feel, or a chill type of setting? A Swing dance lounge is very different from a rustic Country bar, for example. Finding the right place to try dancing with someone new for the first time will ease your nerves.

I suggest heading out to a venue that you’ve been to before. You will be able to settle in better and be comfortable with your surroundings, which will give you one less thing to worry about. If you do find the courage to dance at a new place, though, good for you! Once you know what you’re doing on the dance floor with dance lessons, you’ll be able to go anywhere and bust a move!

3. Dress for the occasion.

Please take this step to heart when planning out your evening. Ladies, keep in mind that sleeveless shirts or dresses may be uncomfortable for the guys you dance with, as your sweat could end up on their arms. This could be very unattractive to a new dance partner, and could deter him from dancing with you again. Guys, do NOT douse yourself with cologne before going out dancing. She could be allergic to certain scents, and you could ultimately be a real turn off, even if you are fun to dance with. Both parties may also want to consider the obvious shower and shave before heading out, so you’re putting your best foot forward for newcomers.

Consider your footwear, too, before leaving the house. A pair of Cowboy boots or high heels with straps around the ankles are good solid options for dancing. With the right shoes, you can really shine on the dance floor, instead of getting distracted. Oh, and please leave your flip flops at home. They aren’t great for any style of partner dance really, and could hold you back from feeling and looking your best.

4. Scope out the room.

This may sound a bit creepy, but seeking out the better dancers will only ensure a more exciting night on the dance floor for you. Don’t get me wrong here. Please always be kind and ask the newbies to dance as well. After all, that is how they become good leaders and followers themselves. Remember that you were also a beginner dancer at one point, wishing you could join the cool kids out there. Now that you’re one of those cool kids, be kind to others. 😉

In any case, observing the dancers will give you a feel for who you’d like to dance with throughout the course of the evening. Again, because you’ve taken the time to be a great dancer yourself, you will have naturally attract others who have put in their time learning.

5. Wait for the right moment.

Timing, as they say, is everything. Never demand a dance, or as for a dance by pulling on someone’s arm. He/she will be available at some point in the evening. Find that time and proceed to Step 6…

6. Go in for the kill.

Finally! You’ve placed yourself in the right place at the right time, and you’re even wearing the right attire, so why not ask him or her for a dance? If he/she has done their homework, they already know they’re going to have a great time dancing with you, so don’t concern yourself with getting rejected. If you do, that’s ok too. You can’t win every dance! The point here is that you have earned your right to be a confident dancer, and that is a wonderful way to approach someone new for a dance. Notice I said confident, not cocky. We all know the difference, right?

Bottom line, you’re now able to dance with anyone, anytime, just by following these six steps! If you’re a newer dancer, where are you getting caught up when it comes to dancing with someone you haven’t met? Comment below. I’d love to hear about your dancing journey!

How to be a Great Student of Dance

salsa dance lessons Phoenix ArizonaThere’s a saying in the dance world that sums up this blog on how to be a great dance student, and I’d like to start by sharing it with you. We say that beginner dancers show up to intermediate dance classes, intermediate dancers attend advanced dance classes and you will always find the most advanced dancers in the beginner dance classes. “Why are the dancers of the highest level showing up to beginner dance lessons?”, you may be wondering. Well, it’s an interesting thing when you realize that the “gold” in dancing, be it ballet or ballroom, is in the basics. Without a solid foundation, we cannot actually become competent dancers. That being said, here are a few more tips from me to you on how to be the best student you can be so that you can get the most out of each and every dance lesson.

To start, let me say that I have been a ballroom dance instructor for over two decades here in the Phoenix East Valley of Arizona. My regular readers know that I, along with my husband, own Dance FX Studios in Mesa, a social dance studio that offers private dance lessons to couples and singles across the valley. We teach Latin, Swing and Country Western dances to adults who want to gain confidence, relieve stress, add romance, and learn a new hobby.

I have literally trained thousands of couples and singles and over the years, I began to realize early on that the one thing that stands in the way of developing into the social dancers we have always wanted to be is ourselves. We stand in our own way, or in the way of our partner unfortunately, when it comes to being awesome social dancers. A recent example of this came about just a few days ago, although I could probably site an example daily, if not hourly, on how this happens. We had a single male student who was doing an incredible job in his Country dance lessons at the studio. In fact, he was feeling so confident that he grabbed a few buddies and went out to Country dancing over the weekend. He came back a few days later completely defeated. Apparently he was told that he had no idea what he was doing by someone who has never had formal instruction. She felt the need to tear him down because she wasn’t able to adapt to his style. He bought into this nonsense and now he doubts his ability, but worse, he doesn’t feel capable of learning how to dance. How sad! Rule number one in my book: Never let anyone tell you what kind of dancer you are (unless you’re seeking positive and constructive feedback from your professional instructor).

Rule number two: Believe in yourself. When you walk into a dance studio for the first time, it is very intimidating. People are Salsa dancing over there, and Swing dancing on the other part of the floor, and you’re sitting there thinking that you could never do that. You can! Don’t start with a negative mindset or it will be that much harder to break through the basics and make real progress.

Rule number three: If you want to grow, leave your excuses and insecurities at the door. This is a tough one. It’s natural to come up with “why” we aren’t getting a certain move in any given dance. Forget the whys. Let’s see how we can make it happen so that you can start to make sense of this new language called dance.

On that note, Rule number four: Come in with an open mind and forget your preconceived notions. You won’t know how well you will do on the dance floor unless you let go of what you think may happen and be open to what is actually taking place. Just because you’re a doctor, that doesn’t mean that you’ll be a quick study on the dance floor. Conversely, if you’ve always felt gawky, you may turn out to be very graceful on the dance floor with some guidance through formal instruction. Don’t stand in the way of your own success by starting your Swing or Salsa dance lessons with limiting beliefs.

My final rule, Be humble. Know that there is always more to learn, hence the advanced dancer who attends a beginner’s dance class so he can re-visit the basics. You’d be surprised at how much faster you will grow in your dancing when you come from this mindset. It’s OK to not be perfect, remember it’s the journey that matters more than the destination.

If you’re considering exploring cool social dances like Country Swing, Two Step or Salsa dancing, go for it! With proper training, anyone (yes, anyone) can learn to dance. And, if you live here in Phoenix with us, we love to help you reach your dancing dreams at Dance FX Studios. We will make learning to social dance a fun and easy experience for you so that you can shine on any social dance floor.

Country Western dancing AZ

Tired of Your Gym Workout? Just Dance!

Country Western dancing in ArizonaIs your gym workout same old same old, boring, boring, boring? Are you starting to skip workout days because you can’t look at that treadmill or stair climber again? Is your same weight training routine giving you the blues? Maybe social dancing is your new answer to “working out” while having fun. There are so many benefits to Swing, Latin and Country dancing, and one big one is getting in shape without even knowing it! Country Two Step or Salsa dancing is a great way to keep fit or stay fit. You might be shaking your head right now thinking, “No way… dancing?”, but our point is before you knock it, try it out!

Taking dancing lessons burns calories and is at the “target heart rate” for fat burning! That’s right, get both body fitness perks from just one activity!  Just a half an hour of Country Swing or Country Two Step, Cha-Cha or Argentine Tango dancing can burn 200 or more calories, making dance lessons your top choice for the best workout while having a blast. Of course, when you do end up dancing at your favorite Country bar or Latin club, being a great social dancer and knowing your way around a dance floor also benefits you socially!

Gain Cardio Endurance! Knowing how to dance, recognizing the appropriate dance for each type of music, means that you will also be out there for more than a few songs. Being a great leader or follower means that you will be called back again and again to the dance floor. When you are dancing for extended periods of time, especially to some of the faster or spicier dances, like Salsa, your heart rate goes up! By committing to dance regularly, your stamina and endurance will increase. This means an improved cardiovascular system for whatever activity you may find yourself doing.

Dancing improves coordination and balance. Taking dance lessons to know how to do a variety of popular social dances means learning dance steps which require new movements by your body. Learning to move well establishes a connection between the mind and body. Improving this mind-connection is important and will aide you in better performance for any type of other physical activity you do.

Elevates mood and strengthens memory! Dancing is exciting and so much fun! Like long distance running, but more entertaining, dancing raises endorphin levels! For these reasons and more, dancing is supported with clinical studies proving that dancing reduces stress. It also reduces depression! If you have a high-stressed job or stressful change in your personal life, why not try dancing twice a week? You will be surprised at how good you will feel during and after your dancing “workout”.

The thing you never get working out solo at a gym … person to person interaction! Learning different types of social ballroom dances like Bachata, Salsa, Tango, Waltz, and Country Two Step requires you to interact with a partner. Even group dance classes will require some interaction with others. When you go out to a club, getting on the dance floor means interaction with other dancers. When you are dancing with another person you are interacting on a physical level, as well as possibly making an emotional connection.

How great is that to getting all of these awesome benefits from one activity? Call Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona today and start a workout plan that is more of a long term body and life-enhancing plan! Take advantage of our New Student Offer to spend an hour being taught person to person by a talented instructor. Why go through the routine of another gym workout? Start a dance routine that changes it up to exciting, fun skill that lasts a life-time today!

Country Swing dancing AZ

Learning to Dance: Cheaper Than therapy and Much More Rewarding!

Country Swing dancing in AZDance has been an integral form of communication, connecting communities and individuals in every culture and civilization throughout history. Social dancing, from Latin to Swing and Country to Ballroom, brings people together in a variety of ways. We use music and dancing to reenact historic events, to express deep emotion, to celebrate and to romance those we love or hope to love. Dancing also has another use…healing.

When most people think of solving personal issues with therapy, their minds immediately wander to psychotherapy, psychoanalysis or clinical therapies. Rarely do people consider the activity of social dancing as an effective form of therapy. Interestingly, dance emerged as psychotherapeutic tool back in the 1940s. Today, research continues to support the use of dancing for a variety of mental stressors and is utilized for individuals, couples, families and groups in crisis.

If your relationship is in crises “dancing is uplifting, enjoyable, engaging, and includes the added advantage of non-verbal communication, which enables participants to express their feelings without words when normal communication channels are absent or broken down” (Strassel et al., 2011). Learning to partner dance, from the Country Two Step to Salsa dancing, focuses on developing a strong connection between two individuals. Moreover, social dance lessons teach the man to be a great leader and the female to follow.  What’s great for couples is that they work out relationship issues without realizing that’s the effect, all while having a great time!

Therapy through dancing is especially useful for couples with medium to severe distress, marriages dealing with infidelity, elderly couples suffering from depression or anyone with anxiety or dementia. For dementia in particular, dancing has been documented in peer reviewed journals as being the top beneficial exercise for Alzheimer disease prevention.

Dance therapy has four valuable components: social, musical, skill learning and physical exercise. Social Dancing may also be particularly beneficial for group and family therapy because the benefits of dancing include: increased self-awareness, improved self-esteem, increased connectivity of thoughts, feelings and actions, improved verbal and non-verbal communication, greater social interaction skills, enhanced relational trust and increased ability to recognize, decipher and express feelings appropriately (Bojner-Horwitz, Theorell, and Anderberg, 2011).

Dancing is a social activity because it is done with another individual and/or a group of people. This human to human interaction is important for all psychological functioning. Adding the component of music, the body is listening, looking, moving and reacting. The results are that dancing reduces stress as well as pain, decreases anxiety and improves relaxation.  How wonderful is that?! Additionally, repeat interaction among other people where a common hobby is comfortably shared, like going Country Swing dancing at a local event, strengthens inner feelings of belonging to community.

Taking dance lessons may be the therapeutic tool that is right for you. It is clear that dance movement has the ability to instill positive life changes by developing and enhancing the relationship of the body, mind and spirit. It’s also easy to see how learning spicy Latin dances, like Bachata or Merengue, helps the imagination and the emotions. Performing any social ballroom style of dancing allows for an increased ability to adapt and to respond to changes in the environment. This means even stressful work relations will improve if the work group participates in social dancing. Imagine what this will also do for morale and productivity!

Isn’t it inspiring that you can do something as fun as Country Dancing, Latin Dancing or even group dance lessons as a bridal party and get the benefits of therapy to resolve issues within couples, family or friendships!? Whether you are getting along in all of your relationships or not, social dancing is sure to enhance your life. For all of you Phoenix residents, let us impact you with social dance lessons at Dance FX Studios. Before long, you’ll see the perks of knowing how to dance for yourself.

Must-Have Social Dances for Holiday Parties and Weddings

ballroom dancing in ArizonaSo Country dancing here in Arizona is just not your thing. You’re just not into Country music, even though you know how popular it is these days. Well that’s OK! There are plenty of other fun dances to explore that will keep you grooving’ to your favorite tunes at that next holiday party or wedding. Which dances should you know so that all of your nights out are covered? Let us give you our top three picks to get you through the holidays and beyond. (By the way, to become a confident dancer, private dance lessons are in order. Find a local social dance studio for adults and give their introductory lesson a try. Then you can see how exciting it really is to know how to dance!)

Swing: Swing dancing is THE must-have dance to cover almost all of your social dance opportunities. Did you know that there are more than 20 styles of Swing dancing? Swing can actually be danced slowly or very fast, depending on the particular style that you learn. For example, you can Swing dance to Rock and Roll, Reggae, Big Band, and even certain kinds of Hip Hop music. So, when you’re at your dance lesson to begin exploring Swing dancing, be sure to let your instructor know what type of music will be played at the event you are attending, and he/she can match the type of Swing dance that you will need to that genre of music.

In addition to being versatile, Swing dancing is awesome for crowded dance situations like weddings and parties because it doesn’t travel. Swing is a “spot dance”, meaning that it generally stays in one area, without requiring space to travel. Fun, useful and cool to know…that’s Swing dancing!

Slow Dancing: While the 8th grade prom sway may seem like enough, there actually are slow dances that make those romantic songs so much more fun to dance to. Here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona, we teach Nite Club 2 Step as an option for slow dancing. With our style of Nite Club 2 Step dancing, all of your favorite slow jams can be covered with elegance and style. No more rocking back and forth when you can move with ease through romantic turns and rotations.

Foxtrot: Learn this favorite Ballroom dance and all of your Frank Sinatra and Michael Buble favorites will be covered! The Foxtrot is a mid-tempo, playful dance that gives you the feel of strolling through the park with the one you love.  The Foxtrot is great to know as an easy starter dance that blossoms into an elegant and beautiful dance as you learn more about it. On a social level, the movements are as simple as walking to a rhythm, making this dance fun to learn and very useful.

Social dancing is extremely versatile and can be taken virtually anywhere. You can take what you learn in social dancing to many different places and events. A good percentage of our students take dance lessons with us because they have a wedding or special event that they are attending. They want to learn to dance and become confident enough to enjoy themselves on the dance floor throughout the entire reception of their friend or family member’s wedding or at a club. Some students have a trip or a cruise coming up that they want to prepare for. We’ve had students who are going abroad to Latin American countries and want to become proficient in the language of Latin dance so they can “go native” when they get there. Other couples come in wanting to learn to Swing or Salsa or Tango dance together and enjoy a fun, stress-relieving hobby that will add some romance to their relationship. Singles who want to learn to dance to become more confident and meet new people come and discover just how great dance lessons are for many other areas of their life, from improving their health to unwinding after a long week. After discussing what YOU want to learn and where you see yourself dancing, you can choose up to four dances to learn in one of our personalized dance programs and take your dancing wherever you go!

Dance FX Studios ensures that each student becomes a proficient social dancer. Not only will you learn the moves and form necessary to look good on the dance floor, but we will also equip you with social dancing tips, tricks and tools to make you shine on every dance floor.

When you go out social dancing, you will come across dance venues and situations that may be awkward or unsafe, more commonly when dancers mix too much alcohol with their dancing. We prepare all of our students for situations like this. Crowded dance floors are a common occurrence, and we make sure our students know how to lead and follow correctly and how to navigate around a dance floor that might be packed with people. This keeps our students and their dance partners safe and comfortable on the dance floor, avoiding collisions or awkward close calls.

One fun part about social dancing is meeting new people. With us, you can learn how to connect with any dance partner and how to enjoy yourself all night long. There are various other tips that will keep you popular on the dance floor, like attire, hygiene, and social tips that you can learn from us too!

3 Dance Tips for Ladies When Dancing With Someone New

Yessss! That hot guy that has been eyeballing you from the bar has finally asked you to dance! Now is your chance to show him all of those cool moves that you learned in your Salsa dance class, right? Wrong! Let’s explore a few tips from us pros on what it means to be a lady on the dance floor. Whether your doing the Country Two Step or the Latin Bachata, the rules are the same. So ladies, heed our warnings on what not to do once you have been asked to dance for the first time with a man that you don’t know.

1. Don’t Lead Yourself: Talk about making him feel inadequate! While this may not be your “intention”, he will feel like he wants to run for the hills if you pull his man card by leading yourself into all of the cool moves that he should “know”. Remember ladies, on the dance floor, he is in charge. Let him do his thing and figure out what feels right for him. Hey, he got on the dance floor to impress you, so help to build his confidence by making him the leader on the dance floor.

2. Don’t show off-Match His Style: So you know he’s cute and you think that if you shake just a little more in that Salsa dance, he’ll want to dance with you again. This may work for a minute, but remember, you are rolling the dice on this one. Intimidating your partner may again make him feel inadequate and “not good enough” to keep dancing with you. Try to match his style and tone things down until he is ready to take it to the next level. This way, he directs you on the dance floor and not the other way around. We get to be in charge off the dance floor, so throw him a bone and relax girls.

3. Don’t Teach Him His Part: NEVER, EVER teach a guy that you have just barely met how to dance on the floor-in front of everyone. If you really want to be strategic, make him look good by smiling and going with the flow. Teaching a guy that has just built up the courage to ask you to dance is deflating. I know that is not your objective, so why turn your dance into a dance lesson?

It’s tricky to be a lady when it comes to ballroom dancing, including Swing, Latin and Country dancing. We usually have to wait to be asked for a dance, wait for a good leader to approach us, and hope that once we get out on the dance floor that he knows what he’s doing. That’s a lot of pressure for him too, though. Go easy, develop a relationship and over time, maybe suggest a few private dance lessons for that cute beginner dancer. Keep these tips from us to you in mind and send him over to Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona, located just minutes from Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert and Scottsdale, AZ. We will build his confidence in no time so that you can enjoy dancing with him rather than directing him. Better yet, give him a gift card for an introductory dance lesson at Dance FX Studios and join him so that you too can pick up a few pointers on how to develop a partnership with your new man. Dancing will bring you closer, guaranteed, as long as you relax and enjoy the journey.
