How to Create the Perfect Wedding Dance

ballroom lessons phoenixWould you like the dance of your dreams for your wedding day, but are afraid that you can’t pull it off? Of course you can…with a little help from your local dance studio for adults.

Forget the eighth grade prom sway and imagine something much, much cooler. It’s your big day and the sky is the limit! Go ahead and rock your reception with a steamy salsa dance or a tantalizing tango, or how about a Country swing dance to knock their socks off? If you can picture it, certainly a professional dance instructor can bring your vision to life.

Now you’ve got the daunting task of researching a ballroom dance studio that offers Wedding Dance Lessons. Once you find one, start with a Wedding Dance Consultation to connect with a professional, check out the studio and make sure that everyone is on the same page. Then the fun part begins…learning to dance!

As a professional ballroom instructor with over two decades of experience choreographing wedding routines for brides and grooms, I can say with confidence that the journey for couples who are learning their wedding dance together is nothing short of fabulous. These couples in love get to discover a new, romantic hobby that will keep them connected both on and off the dance floor. And it’s quite the fun time to instruct such happy pairs!

As with anything, there can be a few bumps in the road when the lessons begin. Creating the ideal wedding dance does not come over night, and definitely not within a lesson or two. The first challenge of any twosome who discovers partner dancing is understanding roles on the dance floor. In ballroom dancing, be it salsa, swing or two step, the man is the lead on the dance floor, and the woman follows. This can be tricky for a “modern” woman who may be used to moving herself on the dance floor, who may have a dance background in ballet, cheer or jazz, or simply for one that is not in the habit of waiting to be told what to do by her man. Once she sees how fun it can be to truly be led around the dance floor, though, dancing together becomes much more exciting!

A second challenge that wedding couples may experience is what kind of music they would enjoy dancing to for their first dance. If she likes Country music and he’s a fan of Heavy Metal (this was one of my recent wedding couples), there could be a disconnect between what song they ultimately choose to perform to for their first dance. Have no fear…your instructor should have a variety of wedding dance songs to choose from that will hopefully please you both.

Lastly, when it comes to taking Wedding Dance Lessons, my best advice is: plan accordingly. Learning to dance is like learning a new language. It can and will take time, so start taking lessons as soon as possible in preparation for your big day. The cake and flowers can be ordered fairly easily, but picking up a new skill will require a bit more. Through it all, keep in mind that dance lessons for couples are a fantastic way to de-stress during the hectic planning of a wedding-especially for the bride. Plus, you’ll have a new talent that you can use on date nights and when you head out to your friend’s weddings in the future.

Enjoy the experience of learning to ballroom dance. It’s a blast! Your friends and family will be envious of what you know, and the dance you create will be surely be treasured by those you love for years to come.

Spice up Your Week With Cha Cha Dance Lessons

swing dance lessons Chandler ArizonaContinuing with our theme of the “history of various ballroom dances“, its time to explore the cha cha. You’ve heard of the popular, and oh so steamy, dance known as cha cha, right? It’s sassy, flirty and tons of fun! Like most Latin dances, the cha cha has an infectious rhythm, a lot of hip action, and plenty of exciting turns.

Unlike salsa dancing, cha cha is all about playing hard to get. There’s this constant flirtation between leader and follower. It’s an off-shoot of mambo and American swing, that originated back in the 1940s, but didn’t gain popularity until a decade later. This dance is more versatile than many people imagine, so beyond the obvious Latin clubs or Mexican cantinas, cha cha can be performed anywhere that top 40 is played. It’s perfect for backyard parties and when you’re cooking dinner with your significant other.

In the 1940s, everyone who was anyone went to Havana, Cuba. It was the destination of the rich and famous, and mambo was at its peak in popularity. Now, we learned about the history of mambo last month here on our blog. In mambo, there was a move called ‘the cha cha cha’, where two slow steps were followed by three quick steps. This eventually evolved into a separate dance entirely and became the basic for cha cha cha, as it was originally called. Since this new rhythm was easier to understand than the complex, ever-varying mambo, cha cha soon pushed out its predecessor.

Dance teacher, Pierre Lavelle of Britain, visited Cuba in 1952. There he noticed this new dance was like Rumba but with extra beats. When he decided to return back to Britain, he taught his version of cha cha. American dance teacher, Arthur Murray, ultimately did the same, and slowed down the tempo a bit, making it easier to learn.

Santana, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias are the typical artists that come to mind when thinking of cha cha. However, cha cha is more versatile than a lot of people realize. For example, all of you Michael Jackson fans out there, next time you listen to “Bad” or “Billie Jean”, do some cha cha! Or maybe you’re into alternative music. “Gives you Hell” by the All-American Rejects is a perfect cha cha song! Maybe top 40 is more your thing. Lady Gaga has a ton of cha cha options including “Poker Face” “Just Dance” and “Telephone” or even Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” would work! Now, I’m sure my country fans out there are thinking, “That’s all fine and dandy, but what about us!?” Cha cha can EVEN be done to Country music! “My Maria” by Brooks & Dunn, “Two Pina Coladas” by Garth Brooks, and “When the Sun Goes Down” by Kenny Chesney would all be appropriate for cha cha!

Have we piqued your interest when it comes to cha cha dancing? Then visit your local dance studio and give Latin dancing a try! Most studios have an Introductory Latin Dance Lesson for Beginners which will help get the ball rolling for you! Spice up your week and learn to cha cha today!

Discover the Romantic Dance Known as Nite Club Two Step

adult dance lessons Gilbert ArizonaYou’re at a wedding, when suddenly, a slow song comes on. One or two couples walk out and begin swaying, and soon, more and more people appear on the dance floor. Your date stares longingly at the dancers who look so happy and in love. What do you do? You ask for a dance, of course! Now is the perfect time to sweep your date off of their feet with a popular dance called the Nite Club Two Step.

The Nite Club Two Step is a social ballroom dance that is useful for those slow, romantic, flowy songs. You should feel as if you’re coasting across water without creating a wake. Given that this dance is non-genre specific, it can be danced to nearly ANY slow song, from R & B to Country music, and it’s a great upgrade from swaying like you did at your junior prom. It was created a little over 50 years ago, and remains to be one of the most versatile dances for social situations.

For those of you who watch So You Think You Can Dance, you may have heard of siblings Benji and Lacey Schwimmer (the winner of season 2, and the 4th place finalist of season 3, respectively). Nite Club Two Step was originally the creative genius of Buddy Schwimmer, their dear old dad. When he invented this new dance style back in the 1960’s, he was a mere 15 years old, and it was more out of frustration, than anything! At parties, his friends would just shuffle or sway in place, and he wanted a more structured but finessed way of doing things. His specialty was west coast swing, and he later became known as the King of Swing and the Man with 1,000 Moves.

Nite Club Two Step still remains one the most versatile partner dances. Just to see how relevant this dance truly is, let’s take a look at the Billboard Chart for this week: http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100. Out of the first 20 songs listed, 16 of them would pair well with nite club. It’s perfect for crowded dance floors or a spacious living room – you can use it anytime, anywhere!

Here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona, over 95% of our students learn nite club. We teach adults how to lead and follow on the dance floor, as well as the mechanics behind each move, in a fun and relaxed studio environment. You’ll get technique and learn how to incorporate your own personal style into the dance too.

Schedule your introductory dance lesson for beginners for only $25 Monday through Saturday. Let’s up your game from junior prom sways and learn how to sweep that special someone off their feet. We can’t wait to help you build the confidence to dance any time music comes on!

Discover the Passion Behind Bachata Dancing!

Latin dance lessons Tempe ArizonaPassionate. Sultry. Heart-pulsing. These are just a few ways to describe the sexy Latin dance known as bachata. Bachata is a newer dance style that originated in the Caribbean, and it’s just downright fun! Growing in popularity, it comes on almost as often as salsa music does these days in the clubs.

While bachata was invented over 50 years ago, it took about 25 years for it to find its place here in the United States. The music is infectious and as soon as it comes on, you’ll find yourself struggling to NOT get up and move!

Bachata began in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, mostly to slower music. Dancers would create a square shape across the floor. The music featured an emphasis on every fourth beat, which translated a larger hip movement on that count (a signature style of bachata dancing). This type of bachata is now referred to as Dominican Bachata or Authentic Bachata.

As bachata migrated West and found its way into American schools in the 1990s, dancers evolved the square shape into a side-to-side pattern. Oddly enough, the name for this ‘revised’ bachata is Traditional Bachata. This is the style we continue to dance socially in the states. In addition to authentic and traditional bachata, there are subcategories such as modern bachata (an off-shoot of traditional bachata with more salsa elements and exaggerated hips), bachatango (a bachata – tango fusion), and of course, the competitive ballroom version.

Bachata would not be what it is today without artists such as Jose Manuel, Ramon Cordero, and Rafael Encarnacion. They truly shaped bachata music in the Dominican Republic. This exciting new sound traveled to New York with the help of Luis Vargas and Antony Santos. Similar to American blues, bachata was born from emotions such as romance and heartbreak. The Dominican Republic was an ever-changing, dynamic place to be at that time. They were no longer ruled by a dictator who promoted censorship and cultural degradation. Self-expression began taking on a new definition, and lyrically, it was a dramatic time in their history.

If you enjoy Latin music and culture, or just want a fun way to stay active, bachata is the perfect dance for you. It’s incredibly easy to learn, and quite useful here in the southwest! Current artists that have an excellent array of bachata music include Romeo Santos, Prince Royce, Aventura, and Pitbull. Almost half of the music that comes on in Latin clubs is bachata so it’s a great one to know!

At Dance FX Studios here in Arizona, we offer private Latin dance lessons as well as adult Group Classes. Schedule your next bachata lesson today and get those hips popping!

Find Out About the Foxtrot, A Popular and Useful Ballroom Dance!

country dancing in Mesa AZWelcome to a week of everything you want to know about popular social ballroom dances! From the elegant Foxtrot to the playful Bachata, we’re going to explore the rich history of several dances that we teach here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona. Are you excited? Me too! Today, let’s take a look into a timeless and gorgeous ballroom dance also known as the Foxtrot.

First, let me start by painting a picture of what the Foxtrot looks like. Foxtrot has a smooth, “stroll in the park” type feel, similar to the waltz, but without the dramatic rise and fall. It is also in 4/4 time, instead of ¾. One unique factor about the foxtrot is that it introduced the idea of using both quick and slow steps in the same dance. This incredibly fun and beautiful ballroom dance is useful to know for weddings, jazz or big band concerts and songs that correlate to Swing dancing.

Did you know that the Foxtrot was invented just after the turn of the century, when ragtime music was gaining popularity? Now, there is some dispute as to who the inventor of this dance truly is, so I will present several different angles.

Depending on who you ask, some people might tell you that Arthur Carringford is the mastermind behind the foxtrot. Arthur was ‘the black sheep’ of his family and he found himself living on his own around age 15. To support himself, he performed an array of random jobs, including a circus performer and a baseball player. Eventually, work led Carringford to San Francisco, where he was hired by a music publisher to sing in the vaudeville theatres. It was there that he took on the stage name “Harry Fox”, after his grandfather. After the earthquake in San Francisco and the fire of 1906, he decided to head east to New York. There he met Yansci Dolly of the Dolly Sisters, who he later married. It was shortly after their wedding that they were seen dancing this new style, which happened to put everyone in a good mood. People started referring to the dance as “Fox’s Trot” and then eventually, just foxtrot. Interesting stuff!

The next creation story begins with Vernon and Irene Castle, who saw their claim to fame in New York and Paris. The Castles were not just ballroom dancing superstars, but entrepreneurs as well. 1914 was an especially busy year for them. They opened up the restaurant “Sans Souci”, a dancing school named “Castle House”, as well as a dance club called “Castles by the Sea”. During that same year, they starred in the Broadway hit, “Watch Your Step”. Some say that this show in particular saw the creation and refinement of foxtrot. Now, even their story has an alternate ending!! At Castle House, the Castles taught all of the latest dance steps. It was here that they began teaching people the foxtrot. Originally referred to as the “Bunny Hug”, the Castles claimed that they had seen people doing this style of dance for over a decade in colored dance clubs.

We cannot discuss foxtrot without mentioning the creative genius of W.C. Handy, who composed “The Memphis Blues” in September of 1912. In his autobiography, Handy mentions that the foxtrot merged because of this song. Vernon and Irene Castle hired musician James Reese Europe to play regularly at Castles by the Sea. James played blues and ragtime music, including Handy’s “The Memphis Blues”. As the Castles promoted the new dance in their club, this song and foxtrot became synonymous.

Regardless of who created the foxtrot over one hundred years ago, we can still utilize this amazing ballroom dance style just as much today. While most people associate foxtrot with artists like Frank Sinatra, there are plenty of current artists whose music we can dance foxtrot to. Musicians such as Michael Buble, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Sam Smith and even Adele have records out there that provide that light-hearted feel that foxtrot calls for. The foxtrot is a cousin to the Country two step, so it’s also easy to transition between swing and two step music, just as it is between swing and foxtrot music.

Not only do we teach foxtrot for social dancers, but we have also choreographed first dances for weddings to foxtrot routines. Here at Dance FX Studios, we make learning the foxtrot a “walk in the park.”

What are the Benefits and Drawbacks of Wedding Dance Choreography

adult dance lessons near Chandler ArizonaIt’s that time! Wedding bells are ringing. You’re getting hitched! Congratulations… you now get to dance in front of all of your friends and family! “What did I get myself into?”, you may be wondering. “Should we have eloped?”, you’re thinking.  The fear sets in as you realize you have to dance in front of everyone you love. Completely understandable. Some people will do just about anything to bypass that dreaded first dance, but there is a solution. What is it? Wedding dance lessons, of course!

Your first dance as a bride and groom can be the most magical experience of your life, once you know how to dance.  A fun and exciting or sweet and simple first dance can actually be the perfect added touch to your big day, and what most people remember most about your wedding.

Learning to dance as a couple is hardly just one more thing to check off your wedding list, like ordering the flowers, or going cake tasting. Ongoing dance lessons will soon be part of your wedding day preparation should you choose to learn a choreographed wedding dance. That’s a great thing! While this may sound more like a “have-to” than a “want-to”, you will soon find that your dance lessons are the best part of your week. You may even begin to look forward to having a date night at your local dance studio as you discover a few romantic moves to sweep her off her feet. And she may love to escape all of the wedding planning stresses by enjoying a relaxing hour with you, her man. Ballroom dance lessons can serve as a fantastic way to connect with each other and explore an exciting new hobby for you two as a couple.

Most people are not born feeling comfortable dancing, so a choreographed first dance will really give you the order and peace of mind that your routine is laid out from beginning to end. By your wedding day, you should be able to dance your routine all the way through on auto-pilot, which is wonderful if the nerves kick in (or if you have had a few too many to drink…).

After meeting with a professional instructor, you will also see that the dance of your dreams can come to life. It’s great fun to think outside of the box and let a professional dancer turn that into reality. You can really rock your reception with a sassy salsa dance or a tantalizing tango routine, or just have some fun twirling your Cowgirl in a Country Two Step wedding dance. The sky is the limit when it comes to being creative, so go for it! It’s your special day.

Learning to dance in general is an incredible hobby for a couple. There are so many benefits to social ballroom dancing that go way beyond your wedding day, from keeping the romance alive to giving each other a fun and exciting outlet to do as a pair.

Truly, the only drawbacks to a choreographed first dance are that lessons can be a small chunk of change, but keep in mind that you are learning a skill that you can use for years to come. And, that it does take time to learn to dance. But, if you can make the time and plan in advance, you will look incredible on the dance floor, impressing everyone you know and love, and that is a really cool feeling.

If you’re getting married soon, don’t sit on getting started with Wedding Dance Lessons. Find a local adult dance studio and set up a Wedding Dance Consultation to get the ball rolling. You’ll be so glad you did!

The Real Reasons Why You Should Learn to Dance

couples dance lessons Phoenix AZOK, it’s going to be tough to stick with just three reasons why I believe you (and every adult) should know how to dance, but I will try my best! First, let me share with you the kind of dancing that I’m thinking of, so we can be on the same page. The type of dancing I want to share with the world is social ballroom dancing. Think Swing, Salsa, Country Two Step and Argentine Tango.

Imagine holding someone close and sharing in a fun, playful or romantic moment with them. Picture you and your sweetie swaying to your favorite music at home in the living room when the kids are asleep. How cool would it be to take a date out Country dancing and swap her off her feet? Wouldn’t it be nice to know how to social dance? I say YES! YES! YES!

The number one reason why, in my opinion, we should all know how to social dance is that it truly does build confidence. Everyone can use a bit more self-assurance in general, and trust me when I say that this does trickle into other areas of your life. Over the years as a ballroom instructor, I have trained many a salesman in Private Dance Lessons, for example, whose numbers have gone up dramatically because they are more fearless after conquering something as intimidating as dance. It’s true, and very cool to watch!

Also, ballroom dancing, be it Salsa or Country Western styles, is an awesome way to spend time with your partner. You can catch a flick, go to dinner, even take a bike ride, but nothing is more romantic than embracing one another and looking into each other’s eyes while dancing. The physical and emotional connection is truly cathartic. For newer couples, seal the deal in your relationship by taking couple’s dance lessons early on. It will give you a go-to skill and hobby that will keep you banded together through thick and thin. (I only say this because when my hubby and I have a spat, we hit the dance floor and within minutes, we are back in harmony again.) For pairs that have been together for some time, dancing will surely reignite that flame that may have dimmed over time. The dimming part is normal, but you don’t have to accept that your relationship will become stale, especially when there’s a way to spice it up.

Lastly, social ballroom dancing is so much fun! it’s easy to get caught up in work and family and not do anything for yourself, or for you as a couple. With exciting dances like Country Two Step or the flirty Tango, you can put some joy and laughter into your week as you gain a new skill. Dancing will get your heart rate up too, so you can let go that much more from life’s everyday stresses.

Give back to yourself or you and your partner by learning to social dance. You can enjoy a hobby that will keep you healthy, youthful and more in touch with each other. You deserve it, right? OK, so what are you waiting for?

If you happen to live in the Phoenix valley of Arizona, we at Dance FX Studios would love to share our passion for dance and all of its benefits with you! Since there’s no one we can’t teach, come join in the fun of social dancing and try out our Private Dance Lesson Introductory Offer. 3 Reasons Men are Afraid of Dancing

adult dance lessons Mesa AZ

There you are at your favorite Country bar waiting to be asked to dance… again. You look great, you’re near the dance floor making eye contact with any guy that is paying attention, and you’re still sitting out instead of Two Stepping the night away! What’s up with that!? Chances are, it’s not you, it’s him.

Even though the stigma of guys knowing how to/liking to dance are long gone (for the most part), there is a lot of fear for men surrounding dance. From being intimidated to thinking they will “look stupid” (I hear this one a lot!), tons of guys are scared to take that step onto the dance floor. Let’s explore why…

Back in the day, it was “uncool” with the guys if you went out there for a Country Two Step or Swing dance. Depending on where you live an how well accepted it is to social dance in your area, some men just can’t get over the idea that dancing really is great to know how to do well-especially for a guy. I mean, if you’re looking to impress your friends, learn to social dance. The ladies will be lining up to dance with you and your buddies will surely be jealous. Not only will you know all the exciting moves to sweep her off her feet, but your friends will want to know them too! A man than can dance is extra-attractive, and every guy should know that so he can come out from the shadows and have some fun!
After getting over that initial fear of dancing not being acceptable to his buddies, a man faces the next mental hurdle which is “Latin dancing (for example) is too complicated. There’s no way I could ever do that!”. They figure that Salsa dancing or Country Western dancing is so far out of their element that they will never look good doing it, so why start. As much as they want to learn, they get cold feet when it comes to signing up for adult dance lessons. What a shame! With specific instruction, especially in Private Dance Lessons, any man (or woman) can learn to dance. Guys, don’t let fear stand in your way of learning an incredible new skill. It is so worth it to know how to dance!
At Dance FX Studios in Mesa, AZ where I instruct, we make it a priority to demystify dancing for guys. We break each element down to their simplest form to ensure that every one of our students can walk away with this exciting new hobby. Our approach to instructing is logical, straightforward and easy to understand, making it super-easy to learn and quite the fun process too!
Couples and singles, come explore the joys of social dance lessons with us! Build your confidence, discover a relaxing and fantastic new hobby and connect with others by learning to social dance. Come receive great information from one of our amazing instructors-you won’t be disappointed!

How Dancing Mirrors Your Relationship

Swing dance lessons Chandler AZAre you looking for a little more fun in your relationship? Would better communication between you and your partner be helpful? Are you missing a deeper connection with your special someone? If you answered “YES!” to any of these questions, couples’s dance lessons may be exactly what you two need.

Adult dance lessons in popular styles from Country Western dancing to Latin dancing offer so much more than just steps for duo’s. I’m talking a chance to work as a team, support each other as you discover a new skill, and so much more! If you want a great gauge as to where you’re at in your relationship, visit your local dance studio for a private lesson or two. You may be surprised as to what is revealed.

As your dance instructor, I can spot out the deeper issues between most couples within the first 30 minutes of a lesson.  Most often, and subconsciously of course, couples communicate with each other on the dance floor the same way they would off the dance floor. I see a lot of the “blame game”, and a general lack of connection between the pair. Unfortunately, this is the norm. The good news is that their behavior is totally changeable as the couple works together towards a common goal of becoming great dancers. Through Private Dance Lessons, couples will have the opportunity to grow in ways that will bring great positive change in their partnership. Here are just a few of them…

  1. A deeper connection. So many couples begin Swing or Two Step dance lessons later in life. They wait for their kids to leave the home, and then they finally make time for each other after years of doing their own thing. Why wait? You will actually be giving more to your children by taking on a romantic hobby with your spouse when they are young. Granted, a babysitter/more planning will be required to make this happen, but what child wouldn’t love to watch mom and dad holding each other tight, smiling and dancing together?
  2. Teamwork. While raising children is a team effort, it is not the most romantic part of one’s day. With couple’s dance lessons, you will be working together and making time to be intimate. This definitely is needed after a long day or week in any couple’s relationship.
  3. Improved communication. Ballroom dancing, even on a social level, requires an understanding of what the other person needs in order to work. On top of that, the communication is non-verbal, so it must be conveyed clearly. With dance lessons, twosome’s can really benefit from this higher form of connection, making their relationship more complete and healthy. Who doesn’t want that?

Regardless of what stage of your relationship you’re in, give Private Dance Lessons a try! You, your partner, and those around you will certainly benefit from the added romance, stronger connection and improved communication that couple’s dance lessons can provide.
