We live in Arizona, and Country dancing is very popular, so why not try putting an extra kick in your step by learning  to Country dance?

Are you interested? Then put on some Kenny Chesney or Miranda Lambert and keep reading to find out what Country dances could be perfect for you…

The Country Western Waltz is the perfect partner dance that allows you to get close and cozy with your partner as you move across the dance floor together. The Country Western Waltz is mostly progressive, moving counter-clockwise around the dance floor. Both the posture and frame are relaxed, with posture bordering on a slouch. The exaggerated hand and arm gestures of some ballroom styles are not part of this style.

The music of Country Waltz songs usually has the word “waltz” in the title. Early Country Waltz music includes “Tennessee Waltz” written by Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King in 1946. Patti Page recorded the song in the 1950s and it became her signature song. More recently Norah Jones recorded a version of the “Tennessee Waltz” and currently there is a lot of good music for dancing the Country Waltz which shows the Waltz is still very popular.

Put a Little Two-Step in Your Step! Another popular Country dance is the Two-Stepwhich has a more upbeat tempo. As with other Country Western dances, there are different versions of the Two-Step including the Texas Two-Step and Arizona Two-Step. Dance partners generally begin in closed position with the leader facing the line of dance. Traditionally the follower stands facing the leader where the leader places his right hand over his partner’s left shoulder. In the more contemporary styling the frame is formed by placing the right hand under the follower’s left arm and on her back. In either case, the leader holds the follower’s right hand in his left hand at about shoulder height.

Express your inner Cowboy as you move through this style of dance that is all about having fun and enjoying the sounds of some great and sometimes more patriotic versions of Country music. Examples of Country Two-Step songs are: “All my Ex’s Live in Texas” by George Strait, “A Better Man” by Clint Black, “Love’s Got a Hold on You” by Alan Jackson and “By the Dawn’s Early Light” by Marcy Brothers.

The West Coast Swing is a partner dance with roots from the Lindy Hop. The rumor is this slotted dance was developed because Hollywood films love the dance and asked dancers to perform it in a way that the camera could capture the sides of their bodies. Therefore the dancers had to stay in the same plane when dancing, they also did this to avoid going in and out of focus. The distinctive elastic look that resulted, is from its basic extension-compression technique of partner connection. West Coast Swing is danced primarily in a slotted area on the dance floor. On crowded dance floors a couple will “claim” an area while other couples cooperate and establish their own slot parallel nearby other dancers.

Swing music is one of the most eclectic forms of Country music. It’s free-wheeling diversity also shows up in rock and roll, an example is Kid Rocks “All Summer Long”. Based in traditional string band music, West Coast Swing is also found within traditional pop melodies, jazz improvisation, blues, and folk music. West Coast Swing may be danced to almost any music in 4/4 time. You will find recordings of Swing music by popular artists such as: Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Tim McGraw, Randy Houser and Carrie Underwood’s popular song “Cowboy Casanova”.

Live The Life of Your Dreams and Dance!

Swing dancing lessons ArizonaSo often here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona, newcomers take that first step into our dance studio years after they have first dreamed of learning to dance. They share with us that knowing how to Swing dance, Salsa dance or even Country dance has been a hidden desire that they have put off for so long. In fact, there are some people that say that they have been wanting to learn to social dance for 25 or more years! “So what has held you back all of this time?”, we often ask. The number one reason, of course, is fear. Fear of not being “good” at dancing, or fear of looking foolish, are the main sources of anxiety. Ballroom dancing can be intimidating, mysterious even. But don’t let your fear of the unknown hold you back from exploring one of the best hobbies for you mentally, physically and spiritually. If you do, you’ll miss out on this…

1. Connecting, or Re-connecting, with your mate. Oftentimes, we work with couples who are in dire straits when it comes to their relationship. We are seeing them at the tail end, when nothing seems to be going right. Thanks to the tools that we use in social ballroom dancing, we can  assist any couple in getting back on track in their love life. How so? Well, do come in and take advantage of our New Student Offer to find out for yourself. 🙂 What you should know is that dancing requires teamwork, and fosters appreciation for a deeper level of communication-non-verbally, of course. Salsa or Swing dancing, for example, will actually bring you closer together, just by clearly establishing your roles on the dance floor and by accepting and assuming those roles. This alone, believe it or not, really does help.

If you’re a couple that does not have “issues”, Tango or Two Step dance lessons are a fun way to keep the passion and romance alive! Having a romantic, go-to hobby on the weekends, like social dancing, is so much more rewarding than sitting in a movie theatre. We know that couples who dance together, stay together.

2. Relaxation. Social dancing is a wonderful way to de-stress and unwind after a busy day or week. When you are dancing, there’s no way you can think about that deal that fell through, or how much you can’t stand your supervisor. So, come invest in yourself by discovering an exciting new interest and giving yourself the gift of rejuvenation and self-care.

3. A Fun Way to Workout! Does anyone “love” to workout? I know that I don’t! But I do absolutely love to dance! When you are Latin dancing for an hour or Country Swing dancing, you better believe that you’re going to be burning calories (up to 500 per hour) without realizing that you’re getting a workout! And, you’ll also be working muscles that you didn’t even know that you had! Isn’t dancing great!?

Now that you know just a few of the many reasons why you can be living a more rewarding and passion-filled life through dance, it’s your turn to take that first step into our studio. If you live here in Phoenix, Arizona, come visit us at Dance FX Studios in the Phoenix East Valley. The Evolution of Country Western Dancing

Country Western dancing has become increasingly popular over the past few decades. It is widely known as a form of social dancing and encompasses many forms and styles of dance. There are several subtypes of Country dancing, including Country Two Step, Country Swing, Country Waltz, Nite Club 2 Step, West Coast Swing, Country Cha Cha, Line dancing, and more, each having multiple versions themselves. Western dancing can be done in a couple or as a group, with Line dancing. Not only can we teach you these types of dances here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona, we will also give tips on leading and following and dance floor etiquette so as to be comfortable when you go out social dancing.

Now for a history lesson in the interesting story of how Country Western dancing came to be. From the earliest days, dances and music arrived in the United States by way of immigrants. People from widely varying cultures brought their native dances with them when they settled in America. Finding common ground through dancing, diverse peoples came together and demonstrated and shared their cultures on the dance floor. With Westward expansion, the pioneers brought their families and ideologies from the East. Dancing was actually frowned upon in this era, and when not banned altogether, “safe” dances were favored, like polka and pattern dances. The pioneers organized cowboy balls, barn dances, and get-togethers. Those who heard of these events usually came to dance. All these varieties of people and their cultures joined with the ideologies and trends of the time and formed hybrids of all types of dances. These dances stem from those of Polish, German, Jewish, French, Scandinavian, Czech, Russian, and Irish immigrants who joined together at these events.

People danced anywhere they could; in barns, on ranches, even under the stars! A dance that was uniquely “western” grew from those varied roots and became a solid part of the lives of many Americans. People also danced in houses. These house parties were very popular in the 1920s when country music was commercialized. Fiddlers and bands played in the main rooms of the houses and party-goers paid the band every time they took to the floor. We even have “house parties” at Dance FX Studios here in Phoenix, Arizona! With music and dancing just like the pioneers, our events are great way to get social and meet other Country dancers and enjoy time with your partner.

Country Western dancing went more public in the 1930s to the 50s by spreading to roadhouses, dance halls, and county fairs. Dance academies were opening and people were requesting Western music. Western Swing bands like Bob Wills and Texas Play Boys were playing frequently and crowds at dance halls and academies were growing. The Western styling was favored over the Eastern way of dancing because it was smoother and mellower. World War II brought armed forces to the West coast, who grew to love the Country Western routines just as their pioneer predecessors did. Jazz and be-bop were also prominent, and dancers experimented with Western dance styles to the new tunes. Worker migrations and movements of the troops caused country music and dance to trickle throughout the United States and even to countries abroad. Beginning in the 1920s, radio delivered music nationwide. Chicago radio station WLS began broadcasting the “National Barn Dance” in 1924. Various types of music continued to become popular and to spread in the following decades, including rock and roll in the 50s and disco in the 70s. Most of these faded out and made way for Country Western to emerge yet again.

These days, Country Western dancing is as celebrated as ever. Especially here in Arizona, there are venues for Country dancing everywhere.
