Discover the Passion Behind Bachata Dancing!

Latin dance lessons Tempe ArizonaPassionate. Sultry. Heart-pulsing. These are just a few ways to describe the sexy Latin dance known as bachata. Bachata is a newer dance style that originated in the Caribbean, and it’s just downright fun! Growing in popularity, it comes on almost as often as salsa music does these days in the clubs.

While bachata was invented over 50 years ago, it took about 25 years for it to find its place here in the United States. The music is infectious and as soon as it comes on, you’ll find yourself struggling to NOT get up and move!

Bachata began in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s, mostly to slower music. Dancers would create a square shape across the floor. The music featured an emphasis on every fourth beat, which translated a larger hip movement on that count (a signature style of bachata dancing). This type of bachata is now referred to as Dominican Bachata or Authentic Bachata.

As bachata migrated West and found its way into American schools in the 1990s, dancers evolved the square shape into a side-to-side pattern. Oddly enough, the name for this ‘revised’ bachata is Traditional Bachata. This is the style we continue to dance socially in the states. In addition to authentic and traditional bachata, there are subcategories such as modern bachata (an off-shoot of traditional bachata with more salsa elements and exaggerated hips), bachatango (a bachata – tango fusion), and of course, the competitive ballroom version.

Bachata would not be what it is today without artists such as Jose Manuel, Ramon Cordero, and Rafael Encarnacion. They truly shaped bachata music in the Dominican Republic. This exciting new sound traveled to New York with the help of Luis Vargas and Antony Santos. Similar to American blues, bachata was born from emotions such as romance and heartbreak. The Dominican Republic was an ever-changing, dynamic place to be at that time. They were no longer ruled by a dictator who promoted censorship and cultural degradation. Self-expression began taking on a new definition, and lyrically, it was a dramatic time in their history.

If you enjoy Latin music and culture, or just want a fun way to stay active, bachata is the perfect dance for you. It’s incredibly easy to learn, and quite useful here in the southwest! Current artists that have an excellent array of bachata music include Romeo Santos, Prince Royce, Aventura, and Pitbull. Almost half of the music that comes on in Latin clubs is bachata so it’s a great one to know!

At Dance FX Studios here in Arizona, we offer private Latin dance lessons as well as adult Group Classes. Schedule your next bachata lesson today and get those hips popping!

More Benefits of Social Dancing…

social dancing in Mesa AZWelcome to part two of our blog on the numerous benefits of knowing how to social ballroom dance. We barely scratched the surface on our previous blog on the positive effects of partner dancing, so let’s pick up where we left off…

4. The Mental Perks of Social Dancing: The process of becoming a confident social dancer requires so much more than just repetition in terms of your steps. Great dancers log many hours on the dance floor remembering how to apply their new language, the “language of dance” to social dance floors anywhere. With that comes lots of practice learning and memorizing your “A,B,C’s” of dance, so to speak. Then, there’s actually taking those letters of the alphabet and putting them together in a variety of ways to keep your lovely dance partner happy and wanting more dances with you. Now that’s an art! The mental energy involved is quite extensive when you think about it. While going out Country dancing, or Latin dancing is a major source of stress relief, it is also something that does take thought initially. From navigating your lady around tons of people, to keeping her excited and on her toes with new combinations of moves, social dancing is a skill that is definitely earned. So, if you’re in search of a metal challenge, give Tango or Two Step dancing a try, and see how you do.

5. The Physical Benefits of Social Dancing, Part 2: A few things that were left out of the previous blog cannot be forgotten about in regards to how dancing is physically beneficial to everyone. From spine health, due to elongating your torso, to an increased surge of endorphins, dances like the Salsa and Country Swing are going to keep you fit and trim all year long.

Lastly, social dancing, especially with a partner, is a great form of expression and creativity. Be yourself, let go and dance! Whether it’s with someone new, or your life partner, dancing is carefree and stimulating. It’s your chance to reveal your inner temptress, diva or Cowgirl, even if for just one dance. You may not be able to shake it in the boardroom, but it’s always OK to be free in the ballroom! Express yourself and see how freeing it can be!

Are you sold on why everyone, including you, should know how to social ballroom dance? Why sit on the sidelines when you can be out there burning up the dance floor, and off the calories!? Enjoy yourself at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona with our New Student Offer for Country, Swing and Latin dance lessons. For just $25 to get started, your mind, body and spirit will thank you!

Spice Up Your Life with Bachata Dance Lessons

Bachata dancing in ArizonaLet’s talk about BACHATA!!! This is a traditional dance that came out of the Dominican Republic, which is where Bachata music was also born. Originally, Bachata was danced very slow and was structured like the Bolero. The basic steps moved within a square (side, side, forward and side, side, back). Today, Bachata has fused into many difference styles of dance! Of the Latin Styles of dance there is Salsa Bachata and Tango Bachata. There are urban versions and modern versions, and they are all popular dance styles.

With regard to dancing, it is important to keep an open mind. Why? Because any new style of dance that you learn will translate over into the dance styles that you already enjoy. Isn’t some extra zing to your moves something everyone is looking in order to become a stand-out dancer and draw attention?  Most people want to stick with the dances that are the popular in a dance club. For instance, aside from the free style dancing you find in night clubs, currently here in Arizona, Country dance styles, like the Two Step, are certainly very popular . Latin dancing, like Salsa, is a strong second! Why not add some Bachata dance steps into your routine to add originality to your style and set you apart from others on the dance floor!

The Bachata is a dance you can learn here at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, Arizona! It is performed as a 4 step, 1, 2, 3 tap and 5, 6, 7 tap, always tapping on the 4 or the 8. Dancers here in the West usually accompany the tap with an exaggerated “pop” of their hips. Sound exciting? Also in Bachata partner dancing, the lead is able to decide whether to perform in open, semi open or closed positions. Bachata is described as a fusion dance and, unlike Salsa, does not include many turn patterns. Just as the rhythm played by different instruments sets the mood and interpretation of all music, this step variety is determined by the rhythm of the music setting the mood and expression of Bachata style dancing.

The basic steps of Bachata added to Tango steps is now called Bachatago. The “pop” count adds elaboration and sensuality to varied Latin Styles as well as Latin Ballroom Dance styles which may include the characteristic kicks from Tango.

Cumbia: An Expressive Latin Dance

The Cumbia, a dance much like Salsa, is a source of great pride for individuals of Colombian heritage. This type of dance is very expressive of the way of life and culture of Colombia, adhering the cultures of African, European, and indigenous Colombian peoples. Dance is all about self-expression and is a source of pride and art for cultures all over the world. At Dance FX Studios, we take interest in how much dances and their rich histories really mean. In today’s hectic world, we can take dance and turn it into something personal and expressive for ourselves. Our studio has been showing students the beauty of numerous dance types for over a decade! Latin dances are especially wonderful for self-expression and releasing your creative, wilder side. The sexy Salsa, exciting Bachata, and playful Cumbia are all wonderful sources to consider. Since learning about and respecting the story of every type of dance is important, let’s discover more about the Cumbia, one of many exciting Latin dances that we offer!

Traditional Cumbia music is influenced by three interesting cultures, allowing for each culture to shine through in special way. The rhythm of the drums of Cumbia music comes from the influence of African cultures.  Wind instruments, especially flutes, chime in, reflecting Indigenous influence. Melodies, costumes, and choreography are thanks to European influence. The word Cumbia derives from the African word “cumbe”, which means dance, and the origin of Cumbia music comes from the days of slavery in the 1600s. Slaves from West Africa brought dance traditions with them to Latin America, one of which was of men vying for female attention by dancing in front of women. It is believed that this style has influenced the birth of Cumbia. Where exactly Cumbia was created has been debated, as the birth places of most dances usually are. One thing for certain is that Cumbia arose from a cultural mix of African and Indigenous roots. One suggestion is that Cumbia was born in indigenous country somewhere around the region Pocabuy Banco or Magdalena. Others argue that Cumbia must have been born in Cienaga (Magdalena) or Soledad (Atlántico). The only sure thing is that it was near the settlements of African descendants, brought as slaves to Colombia. The popularity of Cumbia music rose in the 1950s and 60s, and today in Mexico, Colombia, and other Latin American countries, young artists and dancers are embracing the style of music and dance again. Some are striving to preserve its traditional sound and steps, whereas others are putting their own spin on old traditions, incorporating non-traditional instruments and bringing the influences of other cultures to it.

Dance has proven to be a powerful source of creativity and self-expression all over the world! You can join the fun with lessons at Dance FX Studios in Mesa, AZ.
