Latin Dance Tips for The Beginner Dancer and Beyond…
Are you new to Latin dancing? Would you like to gain a few valuable tips to become a great Salsa or Bachata dancer here in Phoenix, or anywhere for that matter? Let us get you started with ways to improve the look of your Latin dancing.
1.Get ready to shake those hips! Rhythm and soul are such large parts of the Latin genre. Because of that, popular Latin dances here in Arizona, including Salsa, Bachata and Merengue must be executed with what is called Latin Body Motion. It’s that wiggle of the hips that make you stand out, and get noticed, in a Latin club. At first, it will be intimidating to move your hips-especially if you are a beginner Latin dancer with no experience club dancing. You may not even want to be seen for the first few times you go Latin dancing. But, at the end of the day, all great Salsa, Cha Cha and Bachata dancers know how to move with that swagger that makes your dancing look effortless. Simply put, without that Latin hip action, you are simply “walking” through your steps. Go ahead and give those hips a workout. Allow the music to flow through your body and shake what you were given! Dancing is a form of expression so let loose, you may be pleasantly surprised as to what comes naturally when you hit the dance floor.
2.Make sure to take small steps. Latin dance clubs are tight packed full of people. The smaller steps you take, the less likely you are to step on your partner’s toes (or other people’s). Small steps while learning to Latin dance will help to create a habit of being mindful of your surroundings and social dance etiquette. We always recommend beginner Latin dance lessons to see from a trained professional just how tiny those steps need to be. Another reminder as to why small dance steps are important for your Latin dancing in particular is that, with great footwork, your hip-shaking becomes a little easier. That’s always a great thing!
3.Stay the same height when you are Latin dancing. Latin dancing is smooth and slick. The idea is that the upper body looks smooth like butter and the lower body is hot and spicy like salsa. This can only be achieved when you don’t “bob” around up and down on the dance floor. Think forward and back. Small subtle movements with lots of hip shakin’ and you’re on the right track!
