What Others Have To Say About Dance FX Studios…

“We had NO idea what we were signing up for. We knew that we needed to learn “the basics” prior to getting married a mere five weeks away (can we say “procrastination?”). I had tried other dance studios who tried to upsell us leaving us feeling disappointed. Then, we found Dance FX. We jumped right in. Not only did they teach us the basics, but they also coordinated a whole routine that didn’t look “too put together.” One where we sure didn’t look like we were sixth graders swaying. The lessons were packed. Rachel, our choreographer and teacher, knew when we needed a break, when we were stumbling or when we needed a “good job.” They had their work cut out for them since one of us is an engineer and the other a control freak, type A. They did a beautiful job.

The dance went fantastically and really mirrored our personalities. They even edited our song down to 2 1/2 minutes so the dance didn’t go on and on and on (etc). We walked out on the dance floor wanting to make Dance FX proud of us. We never felt like just another student or another upsell. Once we chose our package, there was no pressure. We have a few lessons left and we look forward to going back. I would highly recommend Dance FX. You will walk away feeling confident and accomplished. Thanks!”

Dance FX Studios Makes The News!

Channel 12 news features Dance FX Studios Mesa AZIn promotion of Valentine’s Day “dance and romance” private dance lesson package for two, Dance FX Studios visited the Channel 12 news station yesterday, February 13th, 2012. Dancers Adam Dekavallas (co-founder of Dance FX Studios) and Autumn Moore (Dance FX dance instructor) displayed basic Country Two Step and Bolero-style Nite Club Two Step to showcase how Dance FX Studios helps to make dancing FUN and EASY. Nicole Dekavallas (co-founder of Dance FX Studios), spoke with the host about the benefits of partner dancing including time together, gaining social confidence and adding romance to couple’s lives.

Valentine’s Day is a wonderful opportunity for couples to explore an exciting new hobby like ballroom dancing lessons. There truly is nothing more romantic than holding your loved one in your arms and swinging and swaying to your favorite tunes.

Ballroom dancing lessons encompasses more than just the traditional outdated dances like Waltz and Foxtrot. These days, you can learn dances like the Swing, Country Two Step, Salsa and the sensual Argentine Tango with your special someone.

What are just some of the benefits to taking a group class?  You’ll be able to practice dancing with many different people and learn how to be a stronger leader and follower. Two Stepping With Style!

Phoenix Country Western Two Step DancingYou’ve heard of two step dancing, and you have decided to take a stab at it, since there are many popular places to two step in the area. Wait a minute—there’s more than one type of two step dancing?! Dance FX offers country two step AND nite club two step! How do you know which one to try first? Why are they both different dances with the same name?
Never fear, although both styles of two step are different, they have many similarities, which means they are both labeled as the same style of dance. But we can give you an idea of the differences so you know exactly which style you’re ready to jump in to!
The broad term “two step” merely defines the construction of steps for the basic. These steps are slow and quick according to how many beats of music they use to execute. The combination of ‘slows’ and ‘quicks’ can vary according to which form of two step you’re doing.
Nite Club Two is a slow, quick, quick timing (S,Q,Q) which has a slightly more bolero dance-style-feeling to it and is less likely to be played to country music. Instead, this more romantic version is typically danced to slower music, which carries more passion through the dance moves. Also known as Disco Two Step or California Two Step (if it wasn’t hard enough with only TWO names!) this two step version works along a horizontal line during the basic step.
The country two step, on the other hand, uses a quick, quick, slow, slow (QQSS) count. This is also seen as the more upbeat, lively version of two step. Country two step can be danced to country music, but is not limited to the music genre. The country two step travels more vertically than the nite club two step, and the country version progresses counterclockwise along the dance floor.
So now you can confidently prepare for your two-stepping excursions! You can learn the style that you are most drawn to, and step out on the right foot!

Ballroom dancing is also a social activity that helps to build strong social ties and encourages socializing. Both assist in giving people a higher self-esteem and a positive outlook.

You may not believe it, but the brainpower it takes to remember different dance steps and sequences also helps to improve your memory. In fact, in a study done with Alzheimer’s patients, some were able to recall forgotten memories when they danced to music they once knew.

Any group, large or small, can create their own class. From family to co-workers,  social dancing is that much more fun to do with those you know!

Dancing, Music and Stereotypes

Salsa dancing music Mesa azOur stereotypes about the world around us can often hinder the potential experiences throughout our life. Music and dance styles can generate a lot of stereotypes. When you think of country dance or music, you often already have a preconceived idea of what the people, atmosphere, and music will be about. Some stereotypes can be positive—others negative. Hip-hop is a dance style that often gets a bad rep. Every reader can undoubtedly think of some opinions carried with hip-hop music and dance/dancers.
Now, think of another dance style, say Argentine Tango. Tango is seen as a classy and respected dance style. It was once seen with the same distain as other forms of art; today the paradigm surrounding Tango has been altered. Hip-hop can be described with the same emotion and respect. Jazz is a music style that was heavily banned throughout the 1920’s and, yet again, the public opinion turned around. Or try Rock and Roll or Bachata!
Every new art form has its own evolution and road to acceptance. Our willingness to avoid generating stereotypes will help to broaden our own horizons. So even if you don’t wear cowboy hats, or you don’t know what it means to “drop it and lock it on the dance floor”, you might have the time of your life if you go out and throw yourself into the experience.
In the end, regardless of the genre, music enriches our lives in a way nothing else can. Allow the music to introduce you to a dance style that can do the same.

Expand Your Horizons and Learn to Dance!

Social dancing is a great way to meet people. Learning how to meet people is, debatably, one of the most important skills you will ever learn. Embrace your ability to move on the dance floor and utilize it to your advantage!

Whether your forte is salsa, tango, or swing, you can build your confidence and courage by going out to practice at a local dancing venue. On nearly any website that introduces singles to other like-minded singles you’ll find a list of activities which assist in getting you out into society, and within this list—you guessed it— there’s a recommendation of dancing!

Believe it or not, getting your foot in the door is half the battle. If you see another aimless wanderer, chances are they are waiting to be asked to dance! Women will give eye contact if they are interested in being asked to dance (ladies, this means you need to give eye contact to give the guy a hint! If you’re bold, or if he is clueless, ask him to dance yourself!) Not only will you be able to find the courage to ask for a dance, but often in social dancing, you will switch partners throughout the dance style as well.

Keep in mind that there is a classification of dancers: “beginner” versus “experienced”. This, of course, has a large grey area but as a “newbie” you have the opportunity to practice with other new dancers as well. The great thing about dancing with beginners is that they pretty much want to dance all the time. They are just as eager to get practice under their belt as you are. This way you can both feel a sense of accomplishment together. So head out to the nearest dance floor and groove it!

Integrating Dance in Schools

Ballroom dancing for confidenceMost of us remember the terribly awkward week in school where we realized the school dance was only a few days a way and we had absolutely NO idea how to dance. The best we could hope for was that incredibly strange high-school dance style, with stumbling movements back and forth, and where nervous sweaty hands kept you at a solid arms length away. Although some of us may look back on those moments fondly, many will try to remove them from memory altogether. But today, dance in schools has gained support in public education, not only to prevent those terrible memories, but also as a form of exercise. Dance is now incorporated into most high schools as an alternative to traditional P.E. (physical education). In fact, not only are schools supporting it, but they are also promoting it in lieu of P.E. Dancing in schools is believed to carry a multitude of benefits for student participants.

There is evidence of the power of nonverbal communication through dance. Beyond facial expressions, verbal language versus body language can be a difficult concept for high school-ers to apply in real life applications. Dance can help create an understanding of how the body directs an action without the use of verbal cues.

Ballroom dancing can also promote positive interactions between the two sexes. Social ballroom dancing is often seen as a productive outlet for young ladies and gentlemen to learn dance etiquette. Qualities such as self-esteem, courtesy and the ability to work politely with the opposite gender are often seen as being just as important in dance classes as the dance steps themselves. Many of us could have used all the help we could get in our early teens!

Other benefits attract teachers and schools to dance as well. The Frank Black middle school of Houston Texas says that “Students who excel in the Fine Arts… make better grades in academics, instill self-discipline and increase self-worth and confidence”. Dance falls under this category of fine arts—whether the class is a core class or an optional elective. In many of these dance classes students are required to learn a variety of culturally diverse dances; hip-hop, salsa, ballroom and tango are just some of the dance styles often seen in classrooms or school gyms.

Many of the students who explore social ballroom dancing at a young age will build some (more often than others) much needed confidence as they grow up. This will allow them to feel more comfortable in social situations—not limited to dancing. Perhaps all of the junior high and high school dancing experience can prevent the next generation from at least a few bad memories down the road!
