Phoenix Salsa dancing

Lucky in Love

Phoenix Salsa dancingAs we move into March, the “luck of the Irish” comes to mind. From four-leaf clovers to pots of gold, wouldn’t we all be a bit happier with a little luck on our side? Guys, if you’re looking to get lucky in love this month, or any month for that matter, here’s our suggestion: learn to dance!

Think of how cool it would be to know how to Country Two Step dance, Swing dance or Salsa dance. The ladies would be lining up just to be taken around the dance floor by you. Luck is no longer required once you’ve got the skills! Pretty sweet!

If you’re completely normal, you may be thinking at this point that dancing is so intimidating and way too hard. You could never get good enough to where girls actually wanted to dance with you, right? Wrong! In fact, no good dancer was ever born knowing how to dance, so do yourself a favor and remove the notion that knowing how to dance is a gift from above. You can learn to Country dance, Latin dance or Swing dance with the best of them, with some time and effort on your part.

So where do you begin? After training thousands of confident social dancers over the last two decades, here are a few tips that will get you on the right track:

1. Be yourself. When learning to dance, find a style that suits your personality. For example, if you absolutely cannot stand Country music, don’t waste your time learning to Two Step or Country Swing dance. Start with something that excites you so that you’ll be sure to stick with it. For those of you who love Hip Hop, Salsa dancing is super-fun to do to Hip Hop music. In fact, so is the West Coast Swing.

On another note, you may love dramatic music that goes well with the Argentine Tango, or upbeat, feel-good music that is best paired with Swing dancing. With so many social dance styles to explore, why settle?

2. Take Private Dance Lessons. If you take no other bit of advice, please walk away with this: the fastest way to becoming a great social dancer is through Private Dance Instruction. Sure, you can learn from videos, books and even free group classes in the bars, but the shortest way to get the best results is by making the investment in yourself with Private Lessons.

In Private Dance Lessons, you will get so much more than just patterns and moves. At a quality dance studio, you should also receive leading tips that will make you successful on any dance floor. Now that alone is worth it’s weight in gold.

3. Keep your lessons close together. Now that you realize that Private Dance Lessons are so important, come often to your lessons to get optimal results. There’s no way that you’re going to rock it on that dance floor coming to your Swing dance lessons just once a week. While outside practice will eventually be important, right now you need time with your instructor getting the fundamentals down pat over and over again.

This March, create your own “luck” by discovering a hobby that nearly every woman loves. Invest in yourself and have a blast learning to dance.  Arizona residents can come visit us at Dance FX Studios in the Phoenix East Valley. We would love to give you the tools needed to shine on any dance floor!

Arizona Empty Nesters

Middle-aged couple at dance studio in ArizonaSo, your kids have finally flown from the proverbial “nest.” Although not recognized by psychological professionals as a true clinical condition, empty nest syndrome can take its toll on parents. Depression, grief, and loneliness can set it for a short while or even an extended period. If you aren’t one of the lucky ones who is immediately relieved at the newfound freedom (congrats if you are!), here are a few ways to ease the stress and fill your free time. From a simple phone call to dance lessons, you have plenty of options to brighten your days!

Keep in Touch

Just because your kids are all grown up, it doesn’t mean you have to stop talking to them! Often, the best way to deal with not seeing them every day is just by keeping in touch. A phone call can go a long way to comfort you. If you and your son or daughter have the time, make a parent/kid date out of it! Plan a day and time every week where you know you’ll get to chat and catch up. That way, you keep up to date in their life without being the overbearing parent who calls every hour on the hour. Stay in touch with things like Skype, FaceTime, and the like if you won’t get to see their face in person for a while. Technology has made keeping in touch incredibly easy, so there are no excuses.

Get a Job

The majority of parents who deal with empty nest issues were stay-at-home parents. Now that you have the time, get a job. Just because you don’t have a person to take care of, it doesn’t mean you are useless to the world. You have plenty to offer, so find your calling and get back into the work force. You’d be amazed at how much just getting a job can do to improve your self-esteem.

Reconnect With Your Partner

Some adults think that children are what keep their marriage together. The honest truth is that you actually tend to disconnect from your partner when you have kids. All of the attention in your relationship shifts to the needs of the child, so you lose sight of your romantic side. With your newly empty house, now is the time to rekindle and reconnect. Find a romantic activity for you to do together while you start a new journey. One of the best activities for bonding with your spouse is private partner dance lessons. Whether you love Country music and the fun of Two Step or want to explore the sensual side of Latin dancing, partner dancing allows you to rediscover yourselves physically and mentally. Work together to achieve a goal and gain a new skill together at the same time. Dance is also an incredible stress reliever, so you can get even more out of it than you expect.

Ballroom Dance Benefits: Getting Physical!

Many of you know that ballroom dancing can be an exciting and rewarding social activity, but did you know that there are a variety of physical benefits of learning to dance? Dancing just doesn’t seem like exercise, yet it offers a total body workout, using all of the major muscle groups and providing heart-healthy benefits.

Getting fit should be pleasurable, not boring. Ballroom dancing can actually burn as many calories as a gym workout. For many people looking to get fit, the dance floor offers an exhilarating alternative to the drudgery of the gym, and experts say sticking to an exercise regime is much easier when it’s not a chore. That does make a lot of sense- if you enjoy what you’re doing, you look forward to it and won’t be looking for excuses for why you can’t get into shape!

Depending on the dance-including Latin, Swing, Country Western or even Tango– ballroom dancing can burn anywhere from 250 to 400 calories an hour – about the same as a brisk half-hour walk on a treadmill. What’s great is the more fast-paced ballroom-Latin dances like the Salsa and Cha Cha Cha, can even be compared to an intense session at the gym. Wouldn’t you rather be out somewhere at a Latin dance club or Country bar here in the Phoenix East Valley area kicking up your heels dancing, instead of being on a treadmill?

Feeling like your get-up-and-go just got up and went? Taking a ballroom dance lesson or group class may just help. Research has found that dancing can increase energy levels. A lot of us have sedentary lifestyles, with more people working in offices instead of in physical jobs, which can really leave you feeling drained of all your vigor. Once you get yourself out on the dance floor, dancing will rev up your metabolism and get that blood flowing so you will feel yourself starting to come alive again!

Ballroom dancing can also increase your flexibility. By using muscles that you may not always be using on a regular basis, you will begin to find that stretches you once couldn’t do will give way to flexibility. Not only will ballroom dancing increase your flexibility, it will help with your balance and posture. Staying flexible helps to prevent the loss of mobility, which ensures independence as we age. Being flexible also significantly reduces the chance of experiencing occasional and chronic back pain. So, not only are you having fun dancing, you’re also helping to make sure that you stay flexible-two things that will make your mother happy by standing up tall and straight! 🙂
