Popping and Locking, Yes there is a Difference

The dancerAlthough popping and locking may look like similar Hip Hop dance moves, they are actually two different types of movement. Both types of moves are popular to Hip Hop but popping forces parts of your body outwards, similar to an explosion within parts of your body, while locking is similar to contracting or tightening your body parts into certain positions. Popping also contracts muscles, but it is followed by relaxation that gives it the jerking appearance of popping. Popping can even be done at various intensity levels, with stronger popping using the upper and lower body at the same time.

On the other hand, locking can be identified by its distinctive stops. It is usually performed by stopping the fast movement that you are doing, locking your body into a position, holding it, and then continuing at the same speed as before. Even though popping and locking are two different types of movements, they are often combined together into Hip Hop routines. When combined in a dance, sequences of popping and locking blend together, which is why most people have a hard time identifying a move as popping or locking.
