Learn a Body Roll

One of Hip Hop’s basic dance moves is the body roll. If you haven’t seen it, but surely you have, it is where the dancers uses individual movements of body parts to create a very fluid and snake-like movement throughout their body. There is not one specific way to start the body roll or which direction to roll, as there are many. For example, you can roll head down, feet up, roll forwards, or even roll sideways.

The key to this movement is going to be fluidity and being relaxed while executing it. You may find it hard to be able to control each individual body part at first, but over time and with much practice you are sure to conquer this move.

To start you should have a good base with your feet about shoulder width apart and bent at the knees, almost like a squat position. Keep your hips and shoulders back and be conscious of all body parts. Begin the roll by pushing your feet forward towards the tips of your toes; your heels should be off the ground. Next roll up through to your knees. Push them forward. Followed by your knees, you should push your hips forward. Then you are going to start rolling your chest out a bit while pushing your knees back slightly. Follow that with popping out the chest and shoulders lastly.

Once you get the basic idea and flow to the body roll, you just need to practice it more until it becomes one fluid movement. You can also take a Hip Hop dance class to learn moves like the body roll with an instructor who can help you with specific issues you may be having.
