What Others Have To Say About Dance FX Studios…
“I went to Dance FX to learn how to dance socially in Country bars. At first I was nervous and hesitant about going to take dancing lessons as a single male. After a few weeks I was going out and dancing comfortably. After a few months, I felt very confident in going to clubs dancing and showing off moves. I never thought I would learn as much as I did in such a short time. Thank you very much to the entire Dance FX staff.”
- Brent W.
“Never danced. Don’t have the gene for it. But somehow the folks at Dance FX are able to teach me. They are happily patient, and seem genuinely excited about my progress. These are VERY knowledgeable and skilled instructors who know how to have fun and truly enjoy dancing. I’m actually learning!”
- Jim G.

A Brief History of Country Dancing
Country dancing can be traced back to a popular ballroom dance, the Foxtrot, as well as the Swing. Using similar variations derived from the Foxtrot, the Two Step is also known as the “country cousin” to the Foxtrot. Country dancing as a whole includes many dances including the Country Waltz, the Texas Two Step and the Country Swing, with new country dances and offshoots being created often.
The Two Step received its Country traits and name back to the 1940’s when it reached the square dancing community. Some people say the Two Step also has roots dating back to European and Mexican dance history. In the 1800’s it was said to have appeared in Germany and Hungary and it is connected to Mexican dancing by an influence of the Mexican fandangos.
Did You Know…
Did you know that there is a form of the Country Two Step that is done almost exclusively in Arizona? “Arizona” or “Rhythm” Two Step, as it is also called, is a common variation that stays mostly stationary. Generally, other styles of Two Step dancing, like the Texas Two Step, travel around the dance floor counter-clockwise. This counter-clockwise direction is commonly referred to as the “line of dance” amongst dancers, signifying the flow of traffic, so to speak, on the dance floor.
We teach many forms of the Country Two Step at Dance FX Studios, however the Arizona Two Step is very popular here. What’s great about the AZ Two Step is that it can be done in a very small, crowded space which is perfect for social dancing! Another plus with the AZ Two Step is that you can interchange it with the Country Swing within the same song adding more variety to your dancing.
Grab a pair of your favorite cowboy boots and let’s hit the dance floor! You’ll be twisting, turning, and twirling in no time with the Country Two Step!
Frequently Asked Questions About Country Dancing
Are there different kinds of two step dancing?
Yes! There are Country two step variations based on the region of the country that you are in. For example, there is a “Texas” two step and an “Arizona” two step dance. Both dance styles are useful to know in preparation for going out Country dancing. One of the main differences between these two styles is that one travels more than the other generally.
I am afraid to dance in the Country bars since every time I go Country dancing they are throwing each other around. Where do I go and practice my Country dancing?
Country dancing in the bars in Phoenix can be wild and outrageous or more tame depending on which place you visit. We suggest that you take that step out to a variety of social dance venues and observe for a bit to see where you feel most comfortable. Beyond our list of places to go Country dancing, there are many venues, including our studio, where as a beginner you can ease your way onto the dance floor without fear of untamed dancers.
What other country dances can I learn when a slow Country song comes on?
The Country waltz is a practical dance to know for slow dancing to Country music. Another very useful dance is the Nite Club 2 Step for slower Country music. With private Country dance lessons, we will show you how to identify each Country dance and when to use them.
Do you offer Country line dancing?
Yes! You can learn all of the popular Country line dances in private Country dance lessons at Dance FX Studios. With a group of friends, you can even create your own small class and learn several other Country dances including the Country swing and two step.
